Sonia Cancian - psychanalyst

Sonia CANCIAN, Ph.D.

Psychoanalyst, writer, historian, editor

I work as a clinician in Montreal, Canada and in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I fluently speak French, Italian, English.

In my clinic, I accompany adult expat men and women, migrants, and those who travel frequently or plan to move for extended periods. I work with patients suffering from anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship issues from a psychoanalytic perspective. Psychoanalysis encourages an intensive therapeutic process focused on exploring the unconscious, understanding deep-seated patterns, and facilitating profound personal change. The analyst helps patients navigate, rather than merely treating, their mental and emotional lives.

For several years, I have lived and worked in Canada, Europe, the United States and the Middle East. As a university professor, I have taught migration and contemporary history in Canada, U.S., Europe and the United Arab Emirates. I am the author and editor of over 6 books and dozens of articles in the fields of psychoanalysis, migration history, and women’s history.
